Copa Libertadores wrap: Argentine sides into knockout stage

Boca Juniors and Velez Sarsfield both secured spots in the knockout stage of the Copa Libertadores on Wednesday.

Boca, who were without Juan Roman Riquelme after he sustained a knee injury in the Argentinean first division on the weekend, overcame Brazilian giants Fluminense 2-0, while Velez Sarsfield defeated Mexican outfit Guadalajara by the same score.

Boca striker Dario Cvitanich opened the visitors account with a clean strike from near the penalty spot on 34 minutes, before substitute Juan Sanchez Mino struck from close range to clinch the three points in the 75th minute.

The loss ended Fluminense s perfect group stage record in this year s tournament, though the 2008 Copa Libertadores runners-up remain on top of group four with 12 points, two ahead of Boca…

Thiago would´ve stayed at Barca under Pep

With Bayern Munich and Barcelona set to do battle in the UEFA Champions League on Wednesday, Thiago Alcantara said Pep Guardiola s departure from the Spanish giants influenced his decision to move to Germany.

Guardiola left Barcelona in 2011-12 to take a year-long sabbatical before taking charge of Bayern in June 2013, and prised Thiago to Munich within months of his arrival at Allianz Arena.

The pair are now preparing to face former club Barcelona in the first leg of the Champions League semi-finals at Camp Nou and 24-year-old Thiago said things could have been different had Guardiola prolonged his stay in Catalonia.

Pep has always had a lot of faith in me, and me in him, so if he was still the coach then yes, probably, Thiago told the Independent.

Scotland 1 England 3: Rooney double seals victory over ´old enemy´

Wayne Rooney scored twice as England stretched their winning run to six in a 3-1 friendly victory over Scotland on Tuesday.

Many had predicted a fiercely contested affair between the neighbouring nations but, despite some early resistance from the home side, goals from Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain and Rooney put Roy Hodgson s men in firm control.

The Arsenal midfielder s 32nd-minute opener owed much to a sublime assist from club colleague Jack Wilshere, who teed up the 21-year-old to head past goalkeeper David Marshall.

England s second shortly after the interval knocked the wind out of Scotland s sails at Celtic Park – Rooney this time on target with his head.

Andrew Robertson pulled one back out of the blue in the 83rd minute, but Rooney was on target agai…

Wolves go after Marseille’s Sanson

According to a recent report from L’Equipe, Ligue 1 club Marseille are set to demand a fee of around £25 million for 24 year old midfielder Morgan Sanson. The youngster has been with the French club since back in 2017, when he made the switch over from Montpellier. The primary club that are currently said to be interested in acquiring his services is Premier League high flyers Wolverhampton Wanderers.

The top eight club appear to be on the verge of a place in the Europa League, although it doesn’t realy seem like the deal is going to depend on that all too much. The reason for that stems from their recent dealings, as a number of high profile European names have made their way over to Molineux on a permanent or loan basis in the last few years.

Either way, this fee…

Guardiola on owners spending big: What is the problem?

Manchester City manager Josep Guardiola has brushed off debate around the club s spending insisting it is relative to ambition.

City landed Jack Grealish for £100 million from Aston Villa in the off-season and have been heavily linked with a big-money move for Tottenham s Harry Kane.

In 2020, City purchased Ferran Torres from Valencia for £20m, Nathan Ake from Bournemouth for £40m and Ruben Dias from Benfica for £62m, with their total off-season transfer expenditure reaching almost £144m.

Guardiola pointed to the fact the club sold players to the region of £97m last off-season, while they have again made money selling peripheral players such as Ivan Ilic, Jack Harrison and Lukas Nmecha.

I said last year that we couldn’t spend £100m, Guardiola to…

Ancelotti backs Madrid for LaLiga and Ronaldo to be top goalscorer

After years of waiting, Carlo Ancelotti believes Real Madrid will win LaLiga this season, with Cristiano Ronaldo to top the goalscoring charts.

While Madrid have reigned supreme in Europe, winning two Champions League titles in three seasons, they have played second-fiddle to arch-rivals Barcelona and Atletico Madrid domestically.

Madrid have not claimed LaLiga since 2012, with Barca and Atletico sharing the four trophies since, but former boss Ancelotti now in charge of German champions Bayern Munich has backed the capital club and Ronaldo for success.

In Spain it is difficult, but I think that after so many years Real Madrid will win the league title, Ancelotti told RAI.

And Cristiano Ronaldo will be the top scorer.

Madrid s LaLiga quest has…
