5 players from 2018 WJC team to be charged with sexual assault

The hammer may be coming down on members of the 2018 Canadian World Junior team faster than we thought. Over the past couple of days, two players — Carter Hart of the Flyers and Dillon Dube of the Flames — had taken indefinite leaves of absence from their teams. Today, Alex Formenton left his Swiss team to “return to Canada,” according to the team’s website. Michael McLeod and Cal Foote, who both played in New Jersey’s last game on Monday, missed practice this morning, and the Devils have released a statement that they are taking leaves of absence from the team as well, and declined to comment any further at this time. All of this was seemingly a prelude to the news this morning from the Globe and Mail that five players have been asked to surrender to London, Ontario p…

Sid Catlett, Star Of The Greatest High School Hoops Game Ever Played, Has Died

Sid Catlett, a former NCAA star and brief NBA player who always regarded a high school hoops game as his sporting peak, is dead. Catlett was 69 years old. Officials at DeMatha Catholic High School, his alma mater, put out word on Saturday morning that Catlett had died. No cause of death had yet been determined. A report in the Hyattsville, Md., school’s newsletter last month said Catlett was recovering from brain surgery after suffering an apparent stroke in June, hours after coaching in a youth summer camp in the Atlanta area. Catlett played for Notre Dame from 1968-1971, then spent one injury-riddled season with the Cincinnati Royals of the NBA. But before those stints, Catlett was a member of the storied DeMatha squad that beat Lew Alcindor’s powerhouse Power Memorial High in 1…

In 2010, Male Gymnast Accused Of Rape Said, "I'm Used To Getting What I Want From Women"

Earlier this week, Vitaly Scherbo, the 1992 Olympic all-around champion in men’s gymnastics, was accused by his female counterpart—1992 women’s all-around gold medalist Tatiana Gutsu—of raping her when she was 15 years old. While Scherbo has not made any public remarks since Gutsu alleged he assaulted her at a competition in Germany in 1991—we reached out for comment but have yet to hear back with a response—the coverage in former Soviet Union countries has tilted towards defending Scherbo and discrediting Gutsu. Scherbo’s own words from a 2010 interview do not make him appear upstanding in his treatment of women. Scherbo was talking to Komsomoskaya Pravda about courting his second wife Valentina. The interviewer prompted him by asking how Valentina managed to snag him s…

Just When You Thought the Matthew Stafford Rumors Were Over, A New One Emerges

data-mm-id=”_vnqccxgpi”>Detroit Lions general manager Bob Quinn has been emphatic that there's nothing to the rumors suggesting the team is entertaining trading Matthew Stafford. He really couldn't be more clear, putting periods and exclamation marks on the end of that sentence. But what if Stafford wants out and feels handcuffed by the franchise's unwillingness to explore the market? That'd be spicy. And it's apparently the belief of some rival GMs and coaches, per NFL Network's Michael Silver. Finally, in my @nflnetwork segment, I said this in reference to the Matthew Stafford trade rumors: some GMs and coaches around the league believe Stafford is the one who wants the Lions to move him… an interesting twist on this story. Stay tuned.— Michael Silver…

Meat Loaf's 'Paradise by the Dashboard Light' is the Best Baseball Song Ever

data-mm-id=”_bqs0wbztu”>I recently heard Meat Loaf's Paradise By the Dashboard Light while driving. It's a song I have heard many times in my life, but this time I was struck by the baseball portion of the song. Without basketball to distract me, I dove into a Meat Loaf wormhole. Not a minute could be considered wasted. Legendary New York Yankees broadcaster Phil Rizzuto was the voice of the play-by-play call in Paradise, something that I may have known, but I guess I always assumed it was just stock audio pieced together to describe getting lucky. Turns out Rizzuto actually participated in the recording. Your move, Joe Buck.In 2007, shortly after the death of Phil Rizzuto, Jeff Pearlman, then of ESPN, interviewed Meat Loaf about Rizzuto's role in Paradise. Meat Loaf re…

Former Detroit Red Wings All-Star Pavel Datsyuk Holed Up in Women's Monastery With Rebel Priest

data-mm-id=”_zimbl9ztt”>Pavel Datsyuk retired from the NHL in 2016 after 14 seasons with the Detroit Red Wings. The four-time Lady Byng Memorial Award winner and two time Stanley Cup champion has been playing in Russia's KHL until the league's season was canceled in March because of the coronavirus pandemic. So where is he now? Pavel Datsyuk is holed up in a women's monastery with a rebel priest who believes COVID-19 is a cover so Bill Gates can implant microchips in everyone. Father Sergei, who is Datsyuk's personal confessor, is a prominent Russian Orthodox priest awaiting trial for defying bans on public ministry and suspicion of inciting hatred. Under a previous name, he spent 13 years in prison for murder. Now he's running what some believe is a religious…
